Course Fees and Payment Schedule
Initial Deposit
Upon acceptance of the Letter of Offer and prior to the issuance of the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), students are required to pay the initial deposit specified in their Written Agreement.
The initial deposit may include:

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a mandatory requirement for all international students holding a Student Visa.
Students may either:
- arrange their own OSHC through an approved Australian health insurer; or
- request JHIT to arrange OSHC on their behalf.
Any OSHC fees payable will be included in the Written Agreement where applicable.
Enrolment Fee
The Enrolment Fee is a one-off non-tuition administrative fee payable upon acceptance of the offer.
This fee is generally non-refundable except where this policy specifically provides otherwise or where required under Australian Consumer Law.
Kitchen Kit Fee
Students enrolled in Hospitality qualifications (including Commercial Cookery, Kitchen Management, Bakery or Patisserie qualifications) are required to purchase a Kitchen Kit from JHIT.
The current Kitchen Kit fee is AUD $650.
Once the Kitchen Kit has been issued to the student, this fee is generally non-refundable except where required under Australian Consumer Law.
Pre-paid Tuition Fees
In accordance with the ESOS Act, JHIT will not require an international student to pay more than 50% of the total tuition fees for a course before the course commences, unless:
- the course duration is less than 25 weeks; or
- the student voluntarily chooses to pay more than 50% of the total tuition fees.
Students may elect to pay more than the required amount at their own discretion.
All tuition fees paid before course commencement will be recorded on the student’s Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

Payment Options
JHIT offers flexible payment arrangements.
Option 1 – Full Payment
Students may pay the total course fees (including tuition and applicable non-tuition fees) before commencement.
Option 2 – Standard Payment Plan
Students pay:
- no more than 50% of the total tuition fees before the Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued (unless they voluntarily choose to pay more);
- all applicable non-tuition fees; and
- the remaining tuition fees in instalments as specified in the Written Agreement.
Option 3 – Instalment Payment Plan
Students pay:
- the required initial deposit before CoE issuance;
- applicable non-tuition fees; and
- the remaining tuition fees through approved monthly instalments as agreed with JHIT.
Failure to maintain the agreed payment schedule may result in late payment action in accordance with this policy.
Students wishing to make additional payments or pay outstanding fees early may do so at any time.
Refund
Student Default (ESOS Act-Aligned Definition)
A student default occurs in accordance with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 where an overseas student does not commence or continue their course as agreed, and one or more of the following applies:
- the student does not commence the course on the agreed start date and has not withdrawn or deferred prior to commencement; or
- the student withdraws after commencement; or
- the provider cancels enrolment due to student-related reasons, including:
- non-payment of fees under the Written Agreement; or
- breach of student visa conditions (where caused by the student); or
- serious misconduct following application of procedural fairness (natural justice)
Visa refusal is assessed separately under Section 47E and is not considered student default.
Student Default – Refund Outcome
Where student default occurs, refund eligibility will be determined in accordance with this policy and the ESOS Act.
Unless otherwise required under the ESOS Act or Australian Consumer Law, no refund will be payable in cases of student default.
Student default includes circumstances where the student:
- does not commence the course; or
- withdraws after commencement; or
- has enrolment cancelled due to student-related breaches outlined in Clause 5.
Withdrawal Before Course Commencement
Where written notice of withdrawal is received prior to course commencement:
- 10 weeks or more before the agreed course start date: ➝ 100% of tuition fees paid will be refunded (excluding enrolment fee)
- 5 to 9 weeks before the agreed course start date: ➝ 50% of tuition fees paid will be refunded (excluding enrolment fee)
- Less than 5 weeks before the agreed course start date: ➝ No refund of tuition fees will be provided
Note: Refund eligibility is determined based on the date written notice is received by JHIT.
Withdrawal After Course Commencement
Where a student voluntarily withdraws or discontinues their enrolment after commencing the course:
- No refund of tuition fees will be provided for the current study period or any completed study period.
- Any tuition fees paid for future study periods will be refunded in accordance with this policy, where applicable.
- The student remains liable for any outstanding tuition fees and other charges incurred up to the effective date of withdrawal, as set out in the Written Agreement.
Transfer to Another Registered Provider
Where a student voluntarily withdraws from JHIT and transfers to another registered provider after accepting a place or commencing their course (including where JHIT approves the transfer and issues a Letter of Release, where required, or processes the transfer through PRISMS), the student is considered to have defaulted under the Written Agreement.
Unless otherwise required by the ESOS Act 2000, the Education Services for Overseas Students (Calculation of Refund) Instrument 2024, or the Australian Consumer Law, no refund of tuition fees or non-tuition fees already paid will be provided. The student remains liable for any outstanding fees owing to JHIT under the Written Agreement.
Visa Refusal (ESOS ACT 2000 Section 47E)
Visa Refusal Before Course Commencement
If an intending overseas student’s student visa application is refused before the agreed starting day of the course and the student has not commenced the course, JHIT will provide a refund calculated as follows:
Refund Amount = Total course fees paid − the lesser of:
- 5% of the total course fees received by JHIT before the default day; or
- AUD $500
For example:

Key point
The maximum amount JHIT can retain under this provision is $500. Therefore:
- If 5% of the fees is less than $500, the provider retains 5%.
- If 5% of the fees is more than $500, the provider retains only $500.
Visa Refusal After Course Commencement
Refund = Weekly tuition fee × number of weeks in the default period
Where:
- Weekly tuition fee = Total tuition fee ÷ number of calendar days in course × 7 (rounded up to the nearest whole dollar)
- Default period =Number of calendar days from the default day to the end of the paid period ÷ 7 (rounded up to the nearest whole week)
Where only part of the course has been paid, the calculation applies only to the paid portion.
Evidence Requirement
Students must provide official visa refusal documentation issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
Visa Cancellation
Where a student’s visa is cancelled due to breach of visa conditions, this is treated as student default under Clause 5.
